Hello China!

No wait..well UK after that lovely bill went law for mass surveillance a la 1984..now even more V for Vendetta than i ever thought.

Theresa May is planning to introduce huge regulations on the way the internet works, allowing the government to decide what is said online.

Particular focus has been drawn to the end of the manifesto, which makes clear that the Tories want to introduce huge changes to the way the internet works.

"Some people say that it is not for government to regulate when it comes to technology and the internet," it states. "We disagree."

Because fuck you for privacy, fuck you for freedom of information right?

Jesus Christ people this is an dictatorship in a western world.

Block if me old.

I believe these restrictions will push people to use alternative methods for accessing the internet, or produce a spin of like the dark web. Hell people may even start dialing up again :)

Both sides! Except there's zero evidence of this happening, but I can't be one of the bad ones so obviously nobody, or everybody is!

...so they expect the UK to be able to dictate how the entire internet works, or...?

Like, there's a practical mess of issues and international implications in this notion, along with the bullheaded understanding of how online speech should be handled.

Well if they can't regulate it they'll just cut the cable.

Don't get wrong, I think that conservatives like May are the last people I want regulating the internet.

But I do think that the western world needs to have laws to crack down on fake news, trolls, bots, and other aspects of the internet that go unchecked due to a lack of regulations.

I'm sorry that you can't bully minorities here on Neogaf. Perhaps you should fuck off to somewhere else, which is currently completely possible right now in the free and open internet.

So this is specifically in reference to the Labour Party, because the phrasing of "The Left" is a huge net to cast (as it has more global implications), and wholly disingenuous.

Regulations should be for anything that poses a threat to the public. The internet is not one of those. Censorship for the sake of censorship is just a bad path to walk down.

This thread is about the UK government and PM. Incidentally, the same holds true of the left in Australia not necessarily being much (if any) more friendly to internet privacy and freedom than conservatives.

Please, places with strong support of post modernist ideologies like for example neogaf are very much in favor of regulating free speech or content on the internet and are just as much in the boat of censorship as the right is.

They just use different arguments why they are for regulation, but in the end they want both pretty much the same thing. That is why this left and right bubbles / echo chambers were built up in the first place, to not be confronted with speech or ideas or content you don't like or approve.

When half of that fake news is coming from leaders like Trump and half of the real news is being called fake, do you really want government to decide what is true and what is not?
