Oh man. This reminds me that the neighbor next to our cottage in NH at one point had a tree service guy install some wind chimes 4 stories high into a tree with no way of taking it down without a crane. This didn't bother anyone in my family, because we didn't live there 24/7 and thought it was kind of cool.

Then he died and his daughters sold the property after a year or two.

The next year after the new neighbors moved in I noticed it was missing and I realized they must have taken it down intentionally because it wasn't in the woods on the ground. I wish I could have seen their reactions to realizing where it was and I still wonder how the heck they ever got it down.

There are lots of different styles of wind chime and some can be very loud. Perhaps put up a quieter wind chime. The complaints seem petty, but why be an asshole either way.

I feel you. I'm just saying if it's *really* that bad then regardless of what it is just file a noise complaint. I have all idea the cops would investigate and tell you to stop filing complaints it's not a violation.

I love the sound of wind chimes but if it's on a tree on the sidewalk then what's stopping someone from just taking it down and throwing it in the trash?

I can't think of a wind chime loud enough to keep me awake. But if it is call the cops and file a noise complaint. They will then decide how to proceed.

Also it could be argued keeping the chime up when it's obviously bother folks is petty. Just take the shit down.

My parents bought a wind chime at a Renaissance fair and put it up in our patio.. most fucking annoying thing ever. It wouldn't be as bad if it were a steady sound that kinda fades into the background like a dripping faucet or someone running their dishwasher late at night.. the random clanging is like the kid next door trying to practice on the cymbals but the lil fucker has no rhythm and starts and stop at random times throughout the day and night.

The chimes lasted 2 days before my dad tossed that shit in the trash. Neighbors never complained but I'm sure they were relieved.

I kinda dig reading stories like these. Reminds me I'm not alone in my struggles with my inconsiderate batshit insane next door neighbor.

And yeah, if those wind chimes are on a public tree, hell no they do not belong there and should be taken down. Wind chime lady should hang them from her own porch or window or something. They look honking huge though and I bet they are hella noisy no matter where they hang.

The original note was nice and not passive aggressive at all. Then she responded in a mean way.

For me this isn't a question of right. I don't really care if she has the right to hang the wind chime there. Either way, the nice thing to do would be for her to take it down.

Well I don't think a city is better when it's long time residents are driven out by idiots who want to live in mini gated communities and not live in a vibrant city. There's pluses and minuses to everything.

I like how anytime anyone leaves a note it is perceived as passive aggressive. Sometimes it is the most convenient way to approach the situation, the note writer may not have been sure who's wind chime it was, and that note wasn't passive aggressive.

I mean, even if it would have been better to talk in person, the note was fine and does that warrant like a friggen protest. If a person literally can't sleep because something you put up, even with good intentions, makes noise throughout the night, then be a good neighbor.

Idk how you have a specific right to hang something in a public place in memory of someone and expect everyone else to deal with it. I mean unless her mom died right there or something.

I think no matter what your stance though, this is a fucking stupid article coming from vice. This belongs on some community news blog not a new site.

putting up a note is something I would expect you to do in a midwest suburb. When people usually live on top of each other like they do in NYC, face-to-face communication seems to be the appropriate avenue if you have a dispute with a neighbor. Even if the note was harmless in nature, it can be perceived as passive aggressive and rude in this context.

It'd be interesting to find out if the people complaining about it were originally from NYC because I would bet they aren't.

I don't think it is a good idea to assume every single note is passive aggressive. The content of this one wasn't and it is not always easy or convenient to talk to someone face to face.

I lived in a major city for years, if someone parked in my parking spot I did not go from apartment to apartment in my complex looking for the person who did it, I left a note telling them not to do it again and letting them know I'd call a tow truck the instant I saw their car in my space again. This wasn't passive aggressive, it was pragmatic.

yeah but that person who hung the wind chimes was apparently' raised (if not born) on that block. They're probably used to community dialogue and not notes.

And I'm not saying that every note should be perceived as passive aggressive, just that I understand the reaction of the person it was directed to. I'm not even speaking to the rightness or wrongness of the situation. Just commenting on the forms of communication.

Seemed like a reasonable request to me. Though if the chime was bothering me, I'd either rip the shit down myself or ask them in person to take it down. People are a lot less likely to say no to your face, in my experience.

The chime owner is a fucking dick, and the lady who took all of the notes down to tape up a city ordinance letter is an idiot.

Yeah, I think the LOL Brooklyn angle here is actually that everyone is so nice and passive-aggressive about it. Everywhere else?

"Hey, can you take down those chimes? They're keeping me up at night!"

"No, these are in honor of my dead mother."

Wind chimes mysteriously disappear that night.

And in many places go ahead and skip to step 3.

On one hand, how loud can it be when its on the street in relation to the people complaining, in their apartment? On the other, it is causing quite a ruckus at that distance.

Of course it's in memory of someone, there is no practical use for a wind chime other than a movie prop to tell the audience that completely unhinged people live in this location.

If the neighbors are really that passive about it, they must be literally sprinting to the tree to post the note and catching a cab out of there. The next step is to modify the surroundings of the wind chime without actually taking it down. I'm talking bubble wrap around the chimes, I'm talking dog shit in a bag tied to the string at the bottom, I'm talking putting up louder wind chimes all over his damn tree in memory of airbenders.

And after looking at crooked spin's video it looks like the photo in the article has some perspective trickery or the chime was actually moved closer towards the tree (possibly lower as well) for the shot.
