I'm gonna see RBF, Big D and Suburban Legends next month. Haven't seen RBF since the Warped Tour in '02. So that'll be fun.

That does sound like a lot of fun. I haven't seen RBF since the late 90's. Hopefully they come around my area. It's been a while since I've seen any ska show. I really need to do something about that this summer.

Yea, I'm not sure what the last ska show was that I went to; so this one is something I'm looking forward to. I wish that Goldfinger would play too, but it looks like they are touring until the 2nd of July and then nothing for the rest of the summer. :(

Here's a new band/album to check out. The self-titled EP by The Forthrights. I've been waiting for an album from these guys for a while now. Great album that had lots of a great people in ska working on it such as Vic Ruggiero, Chris Murray and King Django. Definitely recommend checking this one out.

What's up, there's some really good ska out there. Here are some of my recs.

First Wave/Reggae

Skatalites - Lucky Seven
Toots and the Maytals - Fever

2-Tone only really listened to the Specials although Madness and The (English) Beat I hear pop up pretty often

the Specials - Too Much Too Young
the Specials - Nite Club

Third Wave

Fishbone - Question of Life
the Slackers - Have the Time

Also just gonna post this picture cuz it's essential ska listening and hasn't been mentioned too much:

This album is really hit and miss. On one hand some of this record harkens back to some old school ska, but the rest is ruined by a ton of songs bemoaning women and bad relationships. I would like to see a RBF record that didn't have any songs about bad relationships, but alas I don't think AB has it in him.

Oh wow, did that RBF album just come out today? I just looked 'em on spotify today to listen to a few tracks for the first time in years and decided to check out that album as well (hadn't heard anything about it... also hadn't heard anything from them since Cheer Up). Didn't really care for what I listened to of the new album, but I've always thought RBF was hit and miss. Really not too fond at all of that overly poppy third wave sound, though (can't stand Suburban Legends, it goes too far for me). RBF has always had a lot of songs I like, though.

Edit: Oh yeah, this thread reminds me that I've still got to check the album Big D's last two albums. Gonna do that now. Really fell off of the train around 08/09.

Lots of good Spanish ska. I always thought this was sort of strange, as I've never been too plugged into any other Spanish music, and I've been into plenty of other niche genres. I'm not sure why there was such a fair bit of Spanish ska that seeped into the NA scene.

Probably because No Doubt used to be a ska band :P

Also, soultron, what the hell happened to The Expos? I just listened to their new album Lake House and I was massively disappointed :( I saw they had a new album and was so excited and then hear there's no ska to be found.

I didn't mention it at the time because I was trying to wash my brain of it. :c

It feels like an extremely weak reaction to things like Mumford & Sons. I mean, The Expos were kind of transitioning away from reggae-ish stuff for a long time (even Blackwater is evidence of that) but I never expected such a quick and clean break as Lake House.

It's boring. :c

Bummer to hear. Blackwater has such a great sound. I guess I can see how they were moving away from ska/reggae though by not having horns anymore, but it didn't seem like they were going to completely change like this. They had a really unique sound in a genre that needs it and to play this boring crap sucks so much. It sounds like they became worse musicians and vocalists on the new album too. What a waste.

I listened to Lake House for the first time last night so the hurt is still fresh.

I'm glad this was started, I'm a huge ska fan and it's the music that seems to get the most hate. So this can be the ska safety-zone I guess.

The Specials got me into ska, a girlfriend in college had their first album (tape)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgCZN1rU5co

I initially liked it because the songs reminded me of some Clash songs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTnijX0TH-w

I eventually moved to more classic ska acts like Desmond Dekker and The Maytals.

As for current ska, I only like the very traditional bands, esp the Slackers who aren't just a good ska band but a really great band in any genre. I see the slackers about every other year and they've never disappointed. Even the lineup changes have been good. Hepcat is also really good, just wish they'd put out a new album.

Desmond Dekker "007 (shanty town)"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jy5MD8ZjvOo

Toots and the Maytals "Sweet and Dandy"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_St8Kbo4uwU from the Harder they Come soundtrack

Hepcat "I Can't Wait"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKOXz_55IvU

The Slackers "Same Everyday"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e36D29--UmM

The Slackers "Prophet"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n747GrvgDu8

The Slackers "Tin Tin Deo" jamming on the booze cruise
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkXmBe75rfI

The Ratazanas are pretty great, I think they are from Portugal.
