Shame it has come to this, but I guess it is what happens when you cause a shit storm of this size.. He has certainly put his reputation on the line, and probably ruined the rest of his life....the pen is truly mightier than the sword

BBC news correspondent Paul Wood said he understood Mr Steele left his home this week and was now "in hiding".
He said he had been shown the memos in October last year, when he was told Mr Steele was "in fear of his life", believing he would be in danger for speaking out about potential Russian involvement in Mr Trump's election.
He said he had been told Mr Steele left home on either Tuesday or Wednesday, asking his neighbour to look after his cats, and that he had now "gone in to hiding".

Mr Steele is believed to be a former member of the Secret Intelligence Service, MI6, and has been a director of Orbis - which describes itself as a leading corporate intelligence company.

Why would the media, like NYT, blatantly exposed his identity out in the open? What morons! :/

Edit: I meant WSJ.

Yeah, why the fuck did the press let his name out in the open. I mean obviously the powers at be would have already known his name, but making it publicly available is not helping the poor bastard.

You never know when you get the urge to suicide with polonium-210 and write a big apologetic note to Trump and Putin.

Not sure, but I have observed that American journalists seemingly have an enormously over inflated opinion of themselves & their profession, basically seeing themselves as heroic guardians of American democracy and feel that it gives them a blank cheque to publish anything they want.

With that kind of outlook, it's not surprising they did what they did.

He started hiding before WSJ leaked his name. The press that wrote stories about the leak on tuesday did not mention him by name, but his background. He knew that the press would eventually leak more info on him so he went into hiding.

The Wall Street Journal were the ones that initially exposed him, and since they're a part of Murdoch's media conglomerate you can guess their reasons for doing so.

The previous "Ex MI6 officer" described him just fine. Especially considering the media already also said that various three letters agencies already considered him and his sources reliable enough.

Ugh, idiots. Now people with potential information, should they exist, might be dissuaded to go out.

Him suddenly dying now would only credit the whole thing even more. It would be obvious to absolutely everyone that he was murdered for this even if we was found dead with a suicide note. NO ONE would be fooled. You really have to kill them before they leak stuff, not after.

and Steele has reason to be in hiding, based on previous events.

Christopher Steele isn't a real person and Orbis isn't a real company.

They are both MI6 fronts to allow the leaking of high level intelligence information in a way that allows credibility to the information but keeps a certain amount of distance from MI6 and the Government.

The relationship between US and UK intelligence groups is very close and we were in the situation where the one of the Presidential candidates has strong links to Putin and Russia.

The US agencies cannot simply release information showing Trump to be compromised by Russia, they'd be accused of trying to influence the election.

So they ask their friends in British Intelligence, who are just as concerned about Russian influence as the US, to release the information to a respected and influential Republican (McCain) in a way that doesn't directly tie the information to the intelligence agencies but is credible enough that it's believable.

This leads to MI6 using the assets 'Christopher Steele' and 'Orbis' to release the information but as with many things surrounding the election, it doesn't go to plan.

Trumps attacks on the US intelligence agencies are, naturally, poorly received so they double down on Christopher Steele and his report but without the subtlety of the first release.

The release works, the media are all over it and to add extra credibility to the report 'Christopher Steele' goes into hiding leaving his poor cats with his neighbour.

Would a "random" car accident? Or maybe, falling down a set of stairs with structural issues, or commits suicide by shooting himself in the head then stabbing himself through the heart.

Many ways to make it look like a random event.
