In Inkscape make sure it's enabled in "Input Devices" (in the file menu) and then I use the pen tool (picture of a fountain pen). That seems to work and be pressure sensitive.

I don't find it easy to sketch in Inkscape at all though.

Edit - I've just realised it's unlikely I'll be doing this stuff at weekends because all my drawing stuffs are at work.

I'm using one right now. It's fantastic as a starting point for digital drawing before graduating to the more high end (and pricier) models. 90 bucks was a pretty good. Mines is grey and it has dirt on it. :(

Subscribed to this thread. I really need to get into doing some more digital sketches. I'm in the middle of making a comic for my Graphic Novel class that's been eating up most of my time these past couple day. I'll probably post that in the Arts and Farts thread.

However, I'll post stuff in here some time after I'm done with that and my paper. I typically draw people on the subway whenever I go out so that's probably one of the things I'll be posting.

I like:

  • The depth. You did a great job fading in background details like the giant mountains. It really adds atmosphere.
  • The scale. Looks great!
  • The composition. I really like that you didn't center the tower; I think that makes it feel a bit more organic.
  • The color. Green and purple is a brave choice. Kudos to you!

You may want to think about:
  • Lighting. What's the primary light source? Where is it? Right now it feels like it's a bit too grey and murky.
  • Value. Related to the above but, basically, you have a lot of darks in your forest and the foreground which help frame the image but it feels like your lights aren't quite so vivid. A little balance may help.
  • Composition. Yeah, I listed it twice :p Maybe move the spire/tower over a bit more to the right? I think that would really make the piece read a bit nicer, especially with some refined lighting. The open space in the middle of the picture would really enhance the composition, I think.
  • Scale. Yes, also twice! The birds in the foreground are a bit too big and take away from the scale of the tower. Try making them smaller and pushing them into the background more.

Thank you for your critique!!

I spent about 1 hour playing with the image, splashing colors together and coming up with purpose.. It is a quick sketch! I always quit when its time for refining details! I didn't plan ahead so I just made up shapes and turned them into whatever can make some sense..

I have always had problem with coloring and picking colors so I'm glad u noticed that!

I will try to do something about lighting definitely I'm so afraid of fucking it up tho ))):

Maybe I'll post a semi refined version??!

My son was making my draw Mario Characters for him, I was getting tired of it so I drew our family real quick.

This was freehand with a black marker then I colored with markers, took a pic of the original then cleaned it up in Illustrator then, Colored it again. I didnt quite get my wife right though.

I should say how long it took me. Maybe 5 mins for the original sketch and color. Once in Illustrator maybe another 10 mins.

Okay, I did this just now. I didn't know what to draw so I googled "random fictional character" and Wolverine was the first name my eyes fell on. Which is fine since that's what I used to draw all the time as a kid carrying around a sketchbook.

Details: I penciled it with a cheap disposable mechanical pencil, then scanned it in and colored it in Photoshop. My Wacom is an old intuos 3, the one with the 4 1/2 by 6 1/2 work area. Even though I wrote 25 minutes on it when I scanned it in, it wound up being more like 45.

The perspective is pretty questionable especially on his hands, but hey, it was a quickie.

I was just picking random avatars of faces, not even from this thread, and doing a sketch. My ex said that I drew too much as "contour drawing" where I would basically try to get the final lines on my first try. I was trying to be more sketchy with these and I used an eraser a bit. This was messing around at work, maybe 30min total...

If you like, I can do a quick paintover later. Just a 5 minute thing to highlight some of the changes? Feel free to post a refined version but I'd prefer that you didn't use that as your sketch for the day. Do something new and then work on the refined piece.

I am also decent at copying a character /picture (if not too realistic) but find it hard to draw from memory , or real life. tips?

I can't help you on the vector program front but I'll edit the OP with some art resource stuff in the next day or two. Sound good?

Until then, here are some general tips:
  • Good art is hard, so don't worry about it. One of my teachers once said that, for every 100 things you create as an artist, you can say you're good if you do 10 that you're happy with. It just takes time.
  • Drawing from memory is hard as hell and presents a whole host of problems so don't do it if you're just starting out. Drawing from life is still hard but it's also easier to see where you're making mistakes. Start of with things that have more basic geometric shapes (computer monitors, video game cases, cell phones, glasses, cups, cardboard boxes, etc.) so that you can get a grip on basic proportion and perspective.
  • If you have to focus on one thing, make it proportion to begin with. Without a good sense of proportion, your drawing will feel off.
  • When you're drawing cups, glasses or anything else with a circular structure remember: they shouldn't actually look circular when you draw them. They're almost always elliptical.

I used the Corel12 free trial as I was having issues using the wacom tablet in Photoshop. It kept lagging.
Does anyone have a solution? or know of another good free program
