Waypoint link.

Late last week, players of multiplayer space sim Elite Dangerous were blindsided by the sudden appearance of several alien ships. Prior to this point, the enormous galaxy had been entirely human—mining stations, outposts, captains with names like "Kate" and "Paulo" and "Michiko."

But far out in unsettled space, pilots dropped jarringly out of hyperspace lanes, their instrument panels flickered and died, and something vast passed overhead. Their ships were scanned, and the alien craft moved away as quickly as it had arrived.

Elite's galaxy, filled with hundreds of major and minor political factions, was instantly thrown into disarray. While official comments from the game's major fictional players haven't come through yet, the overall impression is that everybody, regardless of political orientation, is panicking. The Elite series has a history with aliens, you see. Previous games have featured the hyper-militaristic, super-advanced Thargoid race, who have had an extremely chequered history with the human race. Nobody has gone as far as attributing these new encounters to the Thargoids, perhaps out of denial.

Today, though, Frontier Developments, the game's designers, released the first patch since the alien encounters. While they are gleefully circumspect about last week's events—the word "alien" never appears in the 3,000 word update—some of the changes listed present disconcerting implications about what might be to come.

Five ships have had their hull strength doubled: The Hauler, the Type 6, the Keelback, the Type 7 and the Type 9 Heavy. These ships form the backbone of Elite's trading economy, carrying tons upon tons of various goods across human occupied space. They trade everything from luxury paté to medical supplies, and aren't usually so heavily armored. This sudden jump in their defense capabilities is, perhaps, a preparatory measure by Frontier. It is in their best interests, of course, to keep trading routes running in the face of danger. Wars, after all, are profitable.

Eleven attack ships have also seen major changes: Each have received between one and three additional weapons slots. This is more than a simple buff; it allows these craft to equip a whole new weapon. The Federal Gunship, a reliable combat support unit, can now equip three more of the game's largest "Size 4" weapon classes.

Viper class ships, Elite's standard dogfighting ship type, have all received an improvement to their chassis weight, allowing them substantially increased maneuverability.

While the exact nature, or intentions, of the aliens have yet to be made clear, today's patch notes make something troublingly clear. On distant stations, in lunar bases, Kate and Paulo and Michiko receive the news.

The human systems' trading craft, their dedicated fighter ships—they are being fitted for war.

I love when patch notes are described like this.

I think the Thargoids are scanning us to see what tech we have because they're going to propose a "treaty" with us.

They'll explain that a previously unknown alien race(that is hostile to both human and Thargoid) is approaching and are going to destroy everything in their path. This would fit in nicely with commanders finding destroyed Thargoid wreckages on planet surfaces.

"The enemy of my enemy is my friend". So we will see an "uneasy" alliance of humans and Thargoids as multiple distress signals come in from distant outposts of gigantic alien(non-Thargoid) warships launching attacks before the outposts go silent..........

It was a false flag operation. The bugs didn't smear Buenos Aires. The Terran Federation wiped out their own people to create nationalistic fervor against the bugs.

You'll see. Jet fuel can't melt Skinnies at that temperature, the Illuminati planned it, etc., etc.

The stuff I hear out of random Elite: Dangerous news stories are starting to sound a bit like Eve Online missives.

This is a good thing. A very, very good thing.

I haven't been following this game at all, but was extremely intrigued by the headlines last week about the first alien encounter and was very impressed with how the devs rolled this out. People just randomly started discovering it - other people didn't believe them, thought it was doctored footage - just like people in real life who claim to have seen aliens.

I am now very interested in this game. Is it worth getting into?

This does sound cool and hopefully can add more variety to the game plus more interesting storyline. Still need to grab Horizons and I suspect this will push me to it.

If your patient enough to learn the controls and not being told directly how to have fun with the game, yes very much so. I've played for about a year and a half and love it. Horizons expansion is a must if you ask me.

This is wrong, the ships in question didn't get more weapon hardpoints they got more optional internal slots and on top of that I think the Gunship only got 2 class 4 optional internals which I think are restricted to only fitting certain modules anyway. Lol if it had 3 fucking class 4 weapon slots on top of it's SEVEN HARD POINTS that would actually just flat out give it more fire power than the anaconda.

Kind of a strange reaction to the patch honestly, a lot of these things are things people have been complaining about for ages, haulers being too squishy, engineer's requiring commodities, not enough weapon diversity so they buffed a bunch of them, and the vipers generally just losing their purpose because they were too clumsy.

It just takes time and patience to learn. Once you have it down you'll be so shocked how you struggled in the beginning. Also just focus on the main tutorials not the advanced.

Just find a system that has a station near a low intensity combat zone. Then cruise around with the local authority ships and help shoot down wanted craft, can be a lot more efficient to earn credits that way.

One of the best games of the past few years. Have played more or less nonstop since December 2014 when I bought it. Picked up Horizons immediately and looking forward to the rest of the season and next. Has improved dramatically over the years and certainly has its flaws, but it's great if you love space sims. VR has really kicked it up a notch and this game is a showcase for current VR headsets. The game works flawlessly with the Rift and looks amazing.

Sounds like socialism to me. Shouldn't the ship upgrades have been accomplished through commerce and crafting in game due to the denizens realizing the need to prepare, rather than wholesale game-wide changes to all ships via a game patch?

If the civilization didn't recognize the danger, then it can fall to the alien horde and the in-game universe changes to a rebellion-based scenario, complete with the rebels and those that choose to be collaborators with the alien subjugators.

Edit btw., only skimmed through the article, but it's extremely hyperbolic. Yes, traders got their hull strenght doubled, but that's because they had so little armour that they were almost fried the instant a combat ship looked at them. And the Vipers' manoeverability, being fighters, was a travesty compared to ships with half a dozen times their mass being able to out-turn them.

Long story short: This is "standard" balancing fare, somtimes long overdue, not necessarily indication of any human vs. other races war starting in Elite's universe.
