I been kicking around the idea of getting a Pro since launch, but with Scorpio on the horizon plus the "not major upgrade" has kind of held me up. I am at the point now wondering if Sony will increase the horse power of the Pro later this year. I feel it will be more of an under the table kind of deal but it makes me think if its worth waiting and seeing. Also, I wonder if Scorpio is branded as the next gen will Sony make a move to get PS5 coming sooner than later?

No and it shouldn't. Sony has had their strategy and they have stuck to it without being reactionary, with better than expected results.

PS4 Pro will not be upgraded until the PS5.
And don't expect the PS5 to be released before late 2018, at the earliest.

Those who bought / buy a PS4 pro are the most 'committed' Playstation fans. I don't think Sony would want to burn those people by rendering their hardware outdated (compared to the most powerful available model) less than a year after purchase.

There won't be another performance bump until the PS5, which is at least three years out.

They already said this isnt going to be a yearly thing. The pro and scorpio are going to sell substantially less than the slim and one s anyways.

Eventually there will be a new console after the Scopio, then MS will release Scopio 2, then PS Pro 3, then Scopio 3, etc. So yes, it's just a matter of how soon.

They don't need it. Scorpio will sell as much as Pro, its not a threat in any way for Sony to need to respond to.

Hell i would have said the same if Sony never came out with a pro and coasted on PS4.

In any case, PS5 is the next hardware from Sony in 2019, that's my view.

I don't think they would upgrade the power this year. They also stated this isn't becoming a year after year thing. I could see an upgraded model (or they may wait until PS5) coming out the Fall following the Scorpio (Fall 2018) or possibly the year after.

which is why I'm building a PC this summer. I think I'm done with consoles.

Anyone think Nintendo, Microsoft or Sony would ever consider having an add-on that can be connected to the console via USB to increase graphical performance? I believe a Razer product does this, no?

On topic, Sony won't release another box until the PS5. To do so would be a waste of time and resources.

It looks like they are adopting different upgrade strategies. Sony seems to be doing a "tick-tock" approach while MS is going with a "tick-tick" approach.
So, to answer your question, no, not in the near future, but soon after Scorpio, we'll likely see Sony do a more major hardware release.

This, again?

What will Sony do when MS drops the price, releases BC, releases the Slim with 4k video, drops the price, does this, that?

Sony isn't reactionary. I think we can all agree on that. They just do their own thing.

Microsoft will have three years max where they can claim they've got the most powerful console on the market, but the PS5 will be looming big time.

No way in hell.

It won't even get a UHD drive, as that would cause a lot of consumer confusion.

The PS hardware will stay as is until PS5, though we may see a slim Pro in a year or two. The slim Pro will not have any hardware changes.

When Scorpio comes out it'll be interesting how it matches up with a $349 (or lower?) PS4 Pro and potentially a $199 PS4

Most people are not going to be able to tell the difference if the same game is running on the pro and Scorpio side by side on tvs unless you are literally right in front of it... and even in most cases you still probably won't.... we are into dimishing returns here.

PS5 can come in 2019, or even 2018, as long as it's backwards compatible with the 4 (I have a strong feeling it will be this time around, Sony has taken a lot of flak for lack of PS3 BC, regardless of its feasibility).

I think Scorpio will be a situation where while it'll be a more significant jump than Pro was, its install base will be so small that most devs won't give enough fucks to actually take advantage of it. This goes double if the hardware architecture is significantly different- making a Pro build isn't too hard because it's literally just the same hardware with double the GPU CUs and a bit more RAM to work with. If Scorpio goes from Jaguar to Vega or something like that it could be trickier to work with.

Regardless, unless Scorpio does extremely well I don't see Sony making a move in reaction to it.

But increasing the power would be another hardware iteration.
