As a wide measure to control the medium, Youtube has imposed a large scale divide between mature content and others. But their messaging seems to direct the LGBTQ community directly. Click the Twitter post to see an example of what kind of content is being filtered

It's a stupid and shortsighted technological solution to a problem that doesn't actually exist, with a super tone-deaf response from Google. I'm pretty pissed off about it too, but I do expect them to roll it back in the next couple days due to the (justified) outrage.

Is the restriction unique to LGBTQ+ videos or are they applied to videos dealing with "sensitive" matters regarding all sexualities? In other words are these not available in restricted mode because their content deals with LGBTQ+ issues or because they happen to fall into the "sensitive" category for reasons beyond that?

This shouldn't even exist to begin with. Youtube needs to be taken to task over this until they rescind and get rid of this clearly hateful tool.

Allowing people to block vids by keyword is fine. People should have control over the content they want to see. Creating a blanket button that removes videos from LGBTQ+ creators under any guise demonizes them. Where's the button to get rid of all cishet romance content, then? Why is it only queer content and creators that are being targeted by this?

The tweet above has a conversation featuring a trans woman who does makeup tutorials, on top of documenting her progress in other areas like facial feminization surgery. As it turns out, most of the videos that were blocked by this filter don't contain any 'sensitive' material at all. There is nothing good about this.

I suspect it's Republican mode? Something that doesn't suggest any videos that might upset somebody politically and with it, frustrate sponsors?

Mind boggling. Never expected Google to come up with such a thing. It's definitely a type of censoring LGBT content to please bigots and hateful people. The more exposure to LGBT issues, the better chance to achieve equality. The term "mature" content is vague. A lot of topics in surrounding the LGBT community can be considered to be mature because of complex they can be. Meaning that children will not be able to understand them, but that's not the point here.

Luckly youtube is incompetent enough that I'm pretty able to beleive this is just unintentional.

Probably just ran the usual porn categories through the automated system and accidentally labelled Lesbian as a porn category.

Of course if it's intentional...

YouTube put out the comment because several Prominent LGBTQ Youtubers noticed issues. Its not YouTube releasing a press release targeting LGBTQ for a insidious reasons.

That said Restricted Mode fails because like so much of YouTube its automated. Community Flagging etc. can lead to things being considered restricted and the way the internet is lots of shitty people can spam flag complaints

I doubt they have that much power over Google. There is nothing on the internet on the Scale of Google or Youtube for them to take their business else where. It's definitely a discretionary choice.

From their statement it seems intentional. I want to know what exactly is considered too much for restrict mode and what isn't to the point that they would make this statement.

Does anyone know what videos (specifically) have been restricted because of this shit? And why only single out the LGBTQ+ community? What about the alt white supremacists? I'd think their content would be seen as more "mature" than anything an LGBTQ+ video maker would put out.

Youtube needs to be more clear on what types of LGBT+ videos they're censoring:

There's a world of difference between censoring LGBT+ youtubers and censoring Andrew Christian adverts.

Top results isn't how you check this. What this does is screw over people who make content that YT will randomly decide to sweep under the rug and fuck the monetization on even further than they already have been since the last change.

For example - if you talk about other topics like bullies, religion, and suicide your shit gets screwed over too. Even if the content is positive.
