We don't know much about the shooting at this moment, but it seems one police officer is dead and another has been injured.

Could a Mod add "Champs Elysees" to the thread title? That's the specific street the shooting has taken place.

I have a close friend who is stuck in an office building right now on Champs Elysees, the attack was right outside of her building. This is fucking scary. She heard the gunshots and it was so loud she thought it was in the building. Makes my stomach turn that the people of France have to go through this.

It doesn't really matter considering how easy it is to get guns in other countries in mainland Europe.

RIP to the victims.

According to the Interior Ministry the attacker was deliberately targeting police and had a kalishnakov, it's not looking like a simple robbery gone wrong.

Edit: apparently they are now demining a car according to Reuters...wtf

Another police officer (possibly, it's not clear yet?) killed in the line of duty. As ever, it's terrible to hear. I just hope this incident doesn't escalate any further.

Whatever the circumstances, doubtless this event will be politicised in the election campaign.

IF it was terrorist related, unfortunately I have accepted that something like this was inevitable prior to (or between stages of) the election. Not to normalise it at all, it was just such a high possibility with such a high-stakes election.

I really hope it's not.

They always are. Be a petty thief and you are "known". It doesn't mean you're under surveillance 24/7 or the intelligence service was incompetent in not seeing them planning a terror attack.

US President Donald Trump said the shooting resembled recent terrorist attacks.

He said: "First of all, our condolences from our country to the people of France. Again, it is happening, it seems.

"It looks like another terrorist attack. What can you say? It just never ends. We have to be strong and we have to be vigilant, and I have been saying it for a long time."

Indeed. There isn't a country in the world that can perform surveillance 24/7 for all the people that they regard as worthy of being known.

Doesn't sound like a robbery.

An eyewitness told Reuters a man got out of a car and began shooting "with a kalashnikov."
