TDKR I found also fairly enjoyable the first time through, it was just after it was over that my brain started going 'Waitaminute'

Prometheus was just so dumb that even turning my brain off didn't work.

Age of Ultron is a decent pick as mentioned earlier - I enjoyed the movie, so not a pick for me, but the trailer made it seem like it'd be a lot more philosophical/heady than it was.

Most recent? Age of Ultron.

The dire darkness of the trailer... which only turned out to be joke fest feat the comedian robot.

Prometheus is just a really good candidate for this. The trailers had me fascinated almost. The movie just sucked.

Personally I was super hyped for Secret Life of Walter Mitty coming off the first trailer and was disappointed with what turned out to be a middling at best film that happened to have a solid cast and cinematography

Not as big a quality plummet as some of the blockbusters in here for sure, but thats what it is for me

It's strange that I agree with Godzilla, Prometheus, Spider-Man 3, Man of Steel, even The Revenant yet I enjoyed all and defend them at times. I guess when you hit a 10/10 trailer the only way to go is down.

It's got to be Prometheus or Man of Steel, right? You could probably pick worse movies, but it's the trailer quality that pushes these two to the top slots.

See the problem for me is that there are some redeeming facts about most of the movies being mentioned here except for one.

Suicide Squad is the worst movie I've seen in a very long time...and the Bohemian Rhapsody trailer is the best trailer I've seen this decade.

Honestly I think it's a letdown the same way the Force Awakens is for some people because they both mine nostalgia and the promise of Star Wars so effectively.

i was kind of disappointed the first time I saw it too. The soundtrack and tone of the movie was pretty somber compared to the first, plus the showdown with bill wasn't what I was expecting.

Most recent thing I can think of is TFA.

It's just a lame reboot of Star Wars, without calling it a reboot. I was hoping for a new story, not a re-hash of A New Hope, and a poorly done one at that. At least it was better than TPM. TFA wasn't a shock of a letdown though, I pretty much gathered it was a rehash of ANH from the trailers.

Before that, probably the shitty terrible new Trek movies. Awful.

Film was on par with Resurrection.

Stuff like MoS, I still thought was a decent flick. Promotheus wasn't.

Godzilla 2014 for the reasons already stated.

Pirates of the Caribbean 3 is a close second. It looked like it would be more of what I liked about Pirates 2, but it felt completely off compared to the first two movies. Plus, the fight scene between Jack and Davy Jones ended up sucking hard without any awesome music to back it up.

Edit: Yeah, X-Men 3 is a good candidate, too.

Some good ones already mentioned in this thread that I agree with, notably The Revenant and Prometheus.

I still like both movies, but they aren't nearly as good as their trailers were.

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

Look at that trailer. Star Wars was returning! And we'd get to see the origin of Darth Vader! And it was going to be so very awesome! How could it not? It was a NEW Star Wars movie!

That trailer was an event. People would go to the movies to see that trailer and leave before the movie started. You could actually download it in potato cam format and watch it at home! There is no bigger trailer than Star Wars Episode I. There may be worse movies to have good trailers, but in sheer trailer hype, you cannot beat it, probably ever. And then we got Jar Jar. And politics. And creepy Yoda. Even if Episode 1 had been good, it would never have lived up to its trailer hype. Nothing short of utterly amazing would have done that.

Probably force awakens and rogue one. The latter had me more hopeful. Now I head into the last Jedi like a beaten dog with low expectations but always coming back.

Runner up would be the recent string of dc movies. All are so terrible. I expect justice league to be bad. I guess it's the transformers syndrome kicking in. Thanks Michael bay

Reign of Fire- The Ad campaign played up the modern military, specifically the Air Force vs. Dragons and all we got was a 10-second clip of that to setup backstory.

Out with this nonsense, not living up to someones expectations on something you happen to love isn't a hot take, whatever that's supposed to mean.

It's a way of shouting down opposing viewpoints in this case.

In most cases, it's someone making a ill informed statement, usually immediately after the point with no time taken to reflect.

I think a year and a half is sufficient time to have formed an opinion of TFA.

Age of Ultron for me. The trailer really made Ultron seem creepy(the Pinocchio trailer mostly) and that he'd be a really interesting villain, but he just ended up being incredibly tame. A movie that really didn't live up to the trailers for me.
