What are your thoughts on circular runways?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-39643292

Really cool idea but fundamentally flawed when shit goes wrong.

Seems to cause more problems than it fixes all in all. Yeah, sounds like a pipe dream.

At first, I thought this was a joke, but after watching the video, it seems like a pretty good idea.

What are the downsides?

If they can figure out how to handle the wings not touching the tarmac they might just have a solution to the space problem that airports have.

What if there were bad winds? The lack of space in between the wingtip and the ground would result in a lot of aircraft damage.

Surely the force of gravity pushing the tyres in the opposite direction would also mean they need replacing more frequently?

Otherwise cool

Pretty cool Mario Kart battle arena.

Pretty bad airport runway.

Why the circular runway concept wouldn't work

yeah I can't imagine that would be easy landing with cross winds etc. The best bet is to do away with conventional aircraft and work on longer distances for quadcopters etc.

As always, these "revolutionary ideas" in these fancy - kickstarter'esque - pitch videos usually have huge flaws and only wow those ignorant of the specifics of actual airport design.

My biggest issues would be:

* That runway doesn't "scale" well with technological progress. If Airbus or Boeing makes a plane with a 10m bigger wing span, they might be unable to land on that runway.

* What about that slanted runway in winter? that extra sideways momentum combined with a frozen runway might lead to some serious issues that you wouldn't have on a flat runway where you'd just have momentum pointing towards the way you're going.

* Is an emergency landing (sight only OR instruments only) even possible on that runway?
* In the case of an emergency landing, if the plane came to a stop, how would you safely evacuate the plane on a slanted runway?

It's a silly idea that solves one problem (space), while creating many many more...

also, my favourite part of the video is how now noise from landing / taking off airplanes is going to equally ruin property values of EVERYONE around the airport, not just those few that are right below the way planes are currently approaching / taking off.
